Crosses

This series of crosses was mostly inspired from a dream I had around Christmas 2020. It was during this time I had been obsessing over some quite beautifully ornate and finely crafted Italian crosses for sale to buy for a friend as a gift. In the dream however I was in a wooden room with no doors or windows but just a strange variety of crosses hanging awkwardly everywhere. Each of the crosses had a theme and as I gazed into them, I would get pulled into them like a vortex. Every cross would act like a door to another dimension that I could go into and leave. This whole phenomenon struck me as very seductive in its strangeness and intrigue in the dream and when I woke up, I was left wondering if I could make something like that for an art project, I had written this down in my notes & I tried to work these out as much as I could, based on this dream as it was very visually inspiring. I think when they are hanging together in a room it starts to capture this for me and transports me to this same dream place. I used art/ hard board, the smaller 11"x14" ones came out pretty jagged because I cut them with a combination of boxcutter and other exacto style razor blades. I just wanted to get out the idea while it was fresh in my head to see how I could go about making these. After these first ones I then used a coping saw and then the best results on the larger ones I used a jig saw with a fine-tooth blade. I gessoed these fairly heavy before painting on them. I will say that painting on something outside the standard square, rectangle, even circles or ovals was a very nice exercise. It also helped me to see how the standard for most art encourages a very specific dynamic for composition that I had at least considered effected my thinking.
